Last week I spent some fabulous days in the mountains of Tyrol with 60 students and 7 other teachers. Every year our school takes the second graders (16 y/o students) to Pfunds/Ischgl on a wintersport week with Snowboarding and Skiing and I have been there six times. It hav always been a pleasure to go up the mountains and guide my students on my snowbaord through the mountains, but also it is a fantastic chance, to get to know my students a little better by spending lots of „quality“ time with them. But as my other classes are still in school working on different tasks and projects I have to be some kind of „online“ and connected to see what is going on at home.
Although my Surface Pro 3 was (naturally) my companion this week I tried to stay in touch with my work „load“ via my Smartphone (Lumia 930). And that’s why I thought I want to write some words about using my Lumia as a working device.
OneNote is everywhere
One of the best thing about OneNote (read this blog post) is that you can use it on ANY Device, EVERYWHERE. So I can quickly fire up the OneNote App on my Smartphone and since I have not only my personal notebooks synced but also my class notebooks I can have a quick look on what my students are doing (or wether they are doing anything at all!)
I am so used to the seemlees sync, that I do not think of it anymore. Some may carry a pen and notebook around to quickly write down their ideas, I simply start the OneNote App and notate or dictate my ideas, so I can work on them when I am back in front of my PC. This is pretty useful for my new task management system I developed.
What I really miss is a stylus for handwriting inputs on my phone. So let’s see if there will be a Surface Phone or if other companies come up with a good product including a stylus for OneNote.
Another cool thing of using the Cloud as my „backbone“ is that I can easily manage files and folders from within OneDrive over my Smartphone. For example: I have taken a lot of pictures at my wintersport week and I invited other colleagues to collect their pictures too, so we can take the best of them and make a presentation for upcoming events. So it was very easy to upload the pics directly to our school’s OneDrive and share the folder (with edit-rights) with my colleagues, so they can also put pictures into the folder and we can work on the presentation together.
With the new OneDrive App on my Windows 10 phone I can easily sync not only my personal OneDrive, but also the two OneDrive for Business at my school and the PH OÖ. So with this in mind, disk space does not really matter any more, as I can copy and paste all my files to my „cloud storages“. Although I need a good internet connection to access my files!
Right now I am not really working with the mobile version of Office, except my archery scoreboard. But I will have a deeper look into this, as it is pretty handy to get/ have access to all your files and quickly do little changes. I would love to get the Windows Continuum feature on my phone, but I fear the Lumia 930 will not be supported.
So, as a Surface Pro 3 Power User I rely very much on this beautiful device, but I am discovering more and more the functionality of the Windows Eco-System and I hope that it will enhance my productivity.
Last, but not least. Here is my favorite pic of last week:
